It’s not often you get to film a music video on the same set as one of the scenes from the iconic British classic ‘For Weddings and a Funeral’, but for Northerner Lulu James, it is the norm. We take a look at her new video for ‘Step By Step’.

Directed by Debbie Scanlan and Liz Adams, the video juxtaposes a holy environment with Lulu James, who hardly portrays the virgin Mary in the clip. Instead, she and her two dancers manage to represent the four seasons, via a multitude of costume changes and camera filters. The Rihanna-esque red wig, for what I can only presume is for Fire, is one of the strongest looks – but inevitably once seeing the post box red hair I did have an urge to pump out one of Riri’s anthems. I resisted, and continued with Lulu, but found it hard not to think a crucifix would fall and injure someone during the video, as repercussions of the scantily clad starlett parading around the church – something I can imagine no church goer would be used to on a Sunday morning. Regardless, the song is a successful mix of house beats and lyrical pop hooks, courtesy of Lulu’s vocals which  are reminiscent of the iconic Grace Jones. ‘Step By Step‘ is available to pre-order here, and is lifted from Lulu’s debut album, set for release through RCA in January 2014.
